Retrospective Kitchen Republic Academy

Reason enough to catch up with two former participants, Tiara Nataf of Naturally Granola and Micaela Schuster of MiShu Contemporary Baking.
Tiara Nataf - Naturally Granola
(KR Academy Spring 2019)
How are you doing? And how did Naturally Granola fare after the Academy?
"It's going well! During the Final Pitch, I won the Mattmo Branding Award and this was a great step for the brand. We went from a 'homemade' look to stylish and professional branding of our products. I notice that people take us more seriously because of this. It helped a lot to approach sales representatives. "
Is Academy knowledge still relevant to your business?
"Definitely. During the program, I found the tasting session with chefs very valuable. Normally, as a beginning food entrepreneur, you don't get the chance to speak to chefs of this level. I was always happy with my recipe, but their affirmation gave me a lot of confidence and a sense of being on the right track. Also, I found all the speakers and companies that joined during the sessions super educational, I got a lot of valuable insights from them.
What I often heard during the program from the coaches and other participants; you are your brand. I found that difficult at times, because for me it was more about my product anyway. Through this advice, I am showing myself more and it benefits Naturally Granola. I am building a beautiful community, which brings a great vibe.
What advice would you give other start-up food entrepreneurs?
"Very cliché, but networking is key. It's so valuable as an entrepreneur to network and create great things together. It also helps to tell everyone you come into conversation with what you do. If you talk passionately about your business, people will always remember that and be open to helping you. Also, don't be too proud to ask for advice if you can't figure it out yourself. I've learned that most people are eager to help move you forward."
Micaela Schuster - MiShu Contemporary Baking
(KR Academy Fall 2019)
How is MiShu doing? Have there been any developments after the final pitch?
"I was in the early stages of my business when I started at the Academy. The pitch and Food Startup Market gave a lot of confidence and confirmation to actually start my production. The feedback from all the guests gave me the confidence to start approaching potential customers as well. The Academy gave me a push over the threshold to really go for my business. I got to know the Dutch market better and discovered who my customers are. I also recently became an official Kitchen member at KR!"
Is Academy knowledge still relevant to your business?
"I keep thinking back to my 'why,' my personal motivation and reason for starting this business. I developed this during the Academy. When I develop products or approach potential customers, it has to fit into my 'why.' This makes making choices much easier. Because of the Academy program, I have a clear goal in mind, this allows me to keep a good focus on the development of my business."
What advice would you give other start-up food entrepreneurs?
"Take your time to think and reflect on what you are doing. Don't rush into producing; sometimes stepping back is not a bad thing. Standing still for a moment can actually move you forward. And of course, keep smiling and enjoying all the things you undertake!"
