On food staycation in the Netherlands

With today's travel restrictions, it's time to explore our own country during the summer. The Netherlands has always been a popular travel destination for many people, this summer we will be vacationing in our own country! That's why Kitchen Republic will be taking you through fun food activities in the coming weeks for the ultimate summer feeling.

First stop: Sammies

Ice Cream Sandwiches Amsterdam Sammies.jpeg

This simple but delicious snack, created by Zoe Brownstone, makes hot summer days a lot more bearable. For Zoe, the ice cream sandwich is a touch nostalgic, but mostly a big trend in her native Canada. But unfortunately hard to find in Amsterdam. And what happens when you have some extra time during Covid-19? Right, then you just make them yourself! Within a few weeks the product was already available at Flo's Appetizing in Amsterdam West. The cake of the sandwich made from scratch and the ice cream supplied by De IJsmakerij.

Zoe notices that "novelty food news" is spreading fast. She says, "Amsterdam is a great city for food innovation. People, both locals and expats, are curious and very open to trying new things. Especially in this day and age, people are looking for fun, new things to try."

The list of outlets grows every week, but for now, this great snack is available at Flo's Appetizing and Noordermarkt.
